About this scroll

PHerc. 332 is a rolled Herculaneum papyrus from the Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli, carbonized during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It was first scanned at the Diamond Light Source in Oxfordshire, UK (2023, at 3.24 µm and 7.91 µm), and rescanned at 2.4 µm at the ESRF in Grenoble, France (2025). It is the innermost part of a scroll, known as a midollo (marrow), a remnant from physical unwrapping of the larger original.
